The idea was pretty simple. Get up a little before 4AM and leave the house by 4:30AM to get to the bottom of the trail going up Maryland Heights.  Hike up the mountain in total darkness to the overlook that looks across the Potomac river at Harpers Ferry.  And then wait for the sunrise!  Of course do this in the fall when the leaves are at their peak color.  What could go wrong?

The getting up and getting there, not a problem.  Even hiking up the trail wasn’t an issue, everyone had a flash light.  We got to the overlook early enough, we even went past some hikers that were camped out up their sleeping (they missed the sunrise by the way).  The real issue came with mother nature.  It’s very hard to time the fall colors, so while we had some colors on the trees, the mountain side wasn’t ablaze with colors.  We also had a slight issue with the sunrise.  Well, the sunrise happened just fine, it was actually all the extra clouds in the sky!  Instead of there being a wash of warm sun falling over the town, it more just got lighter out…

Oh well, still got a nice high resolution image of the town:
