Picture from my Alaskan cruise of humpback whales bubble net fishing.
One of the stops on our cruise through Alaska was at Icy Strait Point. It was a fairly small town but one excursion they offered was whale watching. Since the area they go to is a feeding ground for humpback whales they guarantee you’ll get to see whales! For us this turned out to be very true. If you are in Icy Strait Point I’d definitely recommend doing the Whale & Marine Mammals Cruise, it was well worth the money.
When we got to the spot to do the whale watching there was a large group of whales bubble net fishing. It’s a technique a group of whales will use where they blow a “net” of bubbles to keep a group of herring together. Then they herd the herring to the surface of the water, once there the whales will swim up breaking the surface of the water with their mouths open catching the fish to eat! It was such a sunny day, I was glad to have packed my best fishing sunglasses, as the sun would have prevented me from seeing that. It was quite a sight to see.
This is just a small number of the photos I captured while on the boat, life has been very busy recently so haven’t gotten a chance to go through everything. But check back often, I’ll be posting more! If you’ve got pictures posted of whales, drop a comment and leave a link for others to see.
