Canon 6D Raw Sample Images With Comparison To 5D2 And 5D3

UPDATE: I’ve posted a second set of images that you can download also.  And, if you are looking for more ISO sample raw files go to Neil van Niekerk’s blog, he has a post comparing various Canon and Nikon cameras taken during the day (where as mine are at night).

I rented a Canon 6D from lensrentals.com to have over the weekend so I could test out the new camera.  Supposedly the new camera’s sensor is very good at high ISO and it’s auto focus will work in lower light.  I wanted to do some comparison of the noise at higher ISO compared to my Canon 5D Mark III and Canon 5D Mark II.  Here I’m posting up the raw files for others to look at.

I decided for my tests I wanted to compare the cameras to each other for the same scene.  What I did was setup my tripod (Slik 700DX Tripod and Bogen 3030 3-way pan/tilt head) this morning before sunrise.  I mounted my Canon EF 70-200mm f/2.8L IS II USM Telephoto Zoom Lens onto the tripod and just switched camera bodies without moving the lens.  This way I’d capture the same scene with each camera.  I took a photo of the scene from ISO800 up to the cameras maximum setting going 1 full stop each time.  Each time I mounted a different camera onto the lens I would use live-view and refocus the lens using that camera.  Each scene’s exposure setting was determined by one camera and that exposure setting was used by all the cameras for that scene.  For example, image 1 I metered with the 5D3.  I used those same settings when I mounted the 5D2 and 6D body onto the lens.  Image 2 was metered by the 6D and image 3 was metered by the 5D2.

Right now I only have the raw files up.  The jpg image showing the scene is the ISO800 image from the camera that did the metering.  Eventually I’ll put up the jpg files converted using Canon DPP.  Canon has released a new version that will process the 6D files, just need to go to their website to download the update.  And for anyone interested in buying the 6D, you can check the current price of the Canon 6D here.

If you find a link doesn’t work, let me know and I’ll fix it, thanks!

    • Have you tried right click and then Save As? I just tried using Chrome and they download fine for me. It might be your browser is thinking it’s html and just displaying the file.

  1. Thanks for the comparison. the pictures seem to confirm other tests showing a slight advantag for 6D pics taken at 6400 ISO plus up to 51200 ISO both cameras seem to give similar results at 1600 and 3200

  2. I just got the 6d and tested it out today. I was at a Monster Jam event where the lighting is terrible, and in the past would have defeated my t1i, whose images became iffy at ISO 800 and unusable above that. Many of my images from the day are grainy, but at ISO 12800 I can hardly complain! I am utterly in love with this camera. My husband is starting to regret letting me buy it.

    • That’s great! It’s low light performance is pretty impressive. It used to be really high ISOs were almost not even usable. Now they have gotten to be easily good enough for the web, and with careful editing printable too. Glad you are enjoying it! As for your husband, just need to get him is own 6D so he can find out what all the fun is about!

  4. This was the site and review that has finally helped me make up my mind, thank you. I have been unsure whether to go for the 5DMKIII or the 6D, it will be the 6D. I can get the body, the 24-105mm F4 L, the battery grip, 2 batteries and an SD card for less than the 5DMKIII body alone!! Thanks for taking the time to do the ground work and post your results, most appreciated.

    James.
