On August 23rd, 2011, the Washington DC area was hit with a magnitude 5.8 earthquake (Washington Post article about the earthquake along with a Huffington Post article about the earthquake).  Needless to say, we aren’t used to earthquakes in Washington DC!  Most offices and companies sent people home afterwards, wanting to make sure the structure of the office buildings were ok for employees to return to work.

One of the buildings damaged in the earthquake was the Washington National Cathedral.  Three of the spires broke off the towers of the cathedral.  The large flying buttresses at the back of the cathedral were damaged too with cracks in them.  Workers put up scaffolding in the coming weeks to work on repairing the damage.  You can see the damage to the Cathedral from the earthquake at the Washington Post website and the National Cathedral website.  You can still see a little bit of the scaffolding in this photo, but mostly it’s towards the back of the cathedral so it’s not as apparent.

Equipment used for this photo:
Canon 5D Mark III
Canon EF 24-105mm f/4L IS Lens
Slik 700DX Tripod
Bogen 3030 3-way pan/tilt head
