In order to get colors in the sky like this you need to get up pretty early in the morning.  This photograph of the US Capitol was taken before the sun had even crossed the horizon.  Make sure you click to the full post so you can view the zoomable version of this photograph.

This picture was taken along the shores of the Potomac River next to the Memorial Bridge, on the Virigina side.  This was taken at sunset while some storm clouds were moving in from behind me.  On a dark still night you can get the reflection of the monuments in the water.

Looking down the corridor of columns on the side of the Lincoln Memorial at the World War II Memorial, Washington Monument and the US Capitol.  This photo was taken the same night the Lonely Tourist at the Lincoln Memorial was taken.  It wasn’t as cold out once I moved here to take the picture, just being out of the wind helped a lot!

The same night I took the two pictures at the Korean War Memorial (see Korean War Memorial and Korean War Memorial Part II) I captured this image at the US Capitol.  The moon was full and low that night, providing a nice reflection in the pool.  I wasn’t the only photographer that was thinking of photographing the Capitol with the full moon.  While I was there a fellow photographer setup beside me to also take this photograph.

Every year the U.S. Capitol puts up a Christmas Tree on the National Mall side of the building.  Most people know about the tree in front of the White House at the Ellipse but don’t know about this one.  This is a photograph of the Christmas Tree from 2009.

This image is actually very large, it’s 250 megapixels in size.  The true full size version that could be made is big, this image could be stitched to be 1.5 gigapixel in size, but I made it smaller to make the processing much easier.  Even at 250 megapixel there’s still lots of detail in the image.  Here are a couple 100% crops from the 250 megapixel version:
