The Tidal Basin is a really great location for some amazing sunrises in Washington DC.
This photograph was taken on the same morning as my Jefferson Memorial at Dawn photograph. But the other photograph isn’t just a crop out of this image. Both of these photos were taken separately using two different cameras.
On the morning I took these photographs I had both my Canon 5D Mark II and Canon 5D Mark III with me. Each was setup on a different tripod. The Canon 5D Mark II was setup with the Canon EF 70-200mm f/2.8L IS II USM Telephoto Zoom Lens zoomed in to shoot just the Jefferson Memorial. While the Canon 5D Mark III I used to take this wider panoramic shot. Both come out looking really good.
The Tidal Basin is a good location to shoot sunrises at. The edge of the Tidal Basin has walking paths that make it easy to setup your tripod right at the waters edge. And having the water there gives you some great reflections. The only time it doesn’t work so well is when it’s really windy. Then the top of the water isn’t smooth enough to get the mirrored look in your photograph.
But if it’s going to be a calm morning, get up a little extra early and head down for some good DC photos!
