I shot this photograph of an early morning red dawn over Washington DC last month.
If you’ve never been to the Netherlands Carillon in Arlington, VA to watch the sunrise over Washington DC you definitely need to go sometime. The Carillon is located near the Iwo Jima Memorial, it’s a tall tower with bells at the top. It was a gift from the Dutch people to the United States for our help during World War II. From the Carillon you get a view out over the Potomac River into DC and across the National Mall. The Lincoln Memorial, Washington Monument, and US Capitol are clearly visible. It’s about the only location where you can see all three at once.
From that location you get an unobstructed view of the sunrise over DC. At different times of the year the sun will rise at different locations, sometimes just behind the monuments, sometimes off to the right side. But when the conditions are right you always get amazing colors in the sky.
